Minnesota Impact

Why the Seal Matters in Minnesota

Minnesota students are experiencing the impacts of climate change firsthand—from increased flooding and extreme rainfall to heat, drought, and shifting ecosystems affecting agriculture, water systems, and public health. At the same time, the state’s economy is evolving, with growth in clean energy, sustainable manufacturing, construction, transportation, and climate-resilient infrastructure. Climate literacy is essential to prepare students to participate in this changing landscape and support resilient communities across Minnesota.

Minnesota is a national leader in climate action, with ambitious carbon reduction goals and a comprehensive statewide framework. In 2024, the Minnesota Department of Education updated science standards to include climate change. The Seal of Climate Literacy builds on this foundation—ensuring students not only learn about climate change, but apply that knowledge through local action and are recognized for their efforts.
