How the Seal Works

A flexible, state-level policy framework for climate-ready learning. Students earn the Seal by building climate knowledge, applying systems thinking, and completing real-world projects in their communities.

Skills Developed

Core Competencies

The Seal of Climate Literacy is built on a shared national vision – and is designed to work locally. Students demonstrate mastery across three core competencies:

    Solutions & Innovation

Students put learning into action through meaningful, community-based projects that address real climate challenges and create tangible impact.

What Students Do to Earn the Seal

While requirements may vary by state or local context, earning the Seal of Climate Literacy generally includes three key components:

Students complete a sequence of approved, interdisciplinary coursework that integrates climate literacy across subjects.

Students participate in an experiential learning opportunity that connects climate change to their own community and lived experience.

Students submit an application or portfolio to a designated school or district committee for review and approval of the Seal on their diploma and transcript.

The Power of Hands-On Learning

Experiential learning is at the heart of the Seal of Climate Literacy. By connecting classroom knowledge to real-world challenges, students move from understanding to action. Hands-on experiences help:

  • Apply Knowledge
  • Build Confidence
  • Develop Leadership
  • Strengthen Postsecondary Readiness
  • Explore Career Pathways

Applied learning ensures the Seal isn’t just a credential—it’s proof that students can think critically, act intentionally, and lead in a changing world.
